Pokémon Legends: Arceus is advertised as an action RPG, but it's missing some key gameplay elements and mechanics that would truly make it part of the genre. Thus far, the latest entry in the Pokémon franchise has been overall well received by the Pokémon community as well as the gaming community in general. Game Freak has certainly shaken things up with the release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, leaving behind the standard gameplay loop that sees trainers battle their way to becoming the champion of a given region while also introducing new concepts like space-time distortions and Pokémon Mass Outbreaks.
Action RPGs typically combine different elements, like exploration and crafting, from both the action and role-playing genres. They also usually place a heavy emphasis on real-time combat (as opposed to a system that's turn/menu based) and maintaining control of one's character both in and out of battle. Games like God of War and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild serve as prime examples of what constitutes a true action RPG.
