Pokemon Legends: Arceus exceeded fan expectations upon its release. This is significant due to the era Pokemon is currently in. New installments are more divisive than ever, and the route they are taking makes them look less distinct from each successive predecessor. In contrast with the older days with the Stadium battle simulators, the Orre duology on the GameCube, and the Mystery Dungeon subseries, satisfying spinoffs are nearly non-existent in modern Pokemon. Despite initial skepticism expressed by some fans, Legends: Arceus has one of the strongest scores a Pokemon game has seen in a long while.
Similar to the Shadow Pokemon games, Legends: Arceus is a strange spinoff in that it ties itself to the mainline games to a degree while presenting an original story in a brand-new region. Unlike Orre, where the connections to other regions, particularly Johto and Hoenn, are merely implied, the new Hisui region is blatantly connected to Sinnoh and features ancestors of several recognizable characters from the Gen 4 games. Another thing that distinguishes Hisui from Orre is the fact that it has an actual Pokedex. This is already a tremendous step in the right direction since it normalizes the idea of regions made for spinoffs functioning similarly to the mainline games’ settings.
