The studio behind Pokémon GO, Niantic, has announced a new game called Peridot which features original creatures. While the studio is now most known for developing Pokémon GO, Niantic first gained recognition from its first AR game Ingress. This would become the basis for many of the gameplay elements of Pokémon GO.
When Pokémon GO was released back in 2016, it quickly exploded in popularity and helped Niantic become the multi-billion dollar company that it is today. The hype for Pokémon GO isn't as strong as in its first year, and the studio has had to make adjustments to the game during the pandemic, but Pokémon GO has fortunately been able to maintain its playerbase over the past few years. And with countries beginning to open up again, Niantic announced that it will be holding in-person Pokémon GO Fest events again this year.

In a new blog post, Niantic (via The Verge) announced Peridot, its new AR pet game and its first original IP since 2013’s Ingress. Peridot seems like a cross between Pokémon GO and Tamagotchi as players are tasked with nurturing and breeding the game’s mystical creatures. According to Niantic, Peridots (or Dots for short) have awakened after being in hibernation for thousands of years and players must help them survive in this new world. Players will be able to pet, feed, and breed their unique Peridots as well as take them on walks to find food and items, and to complete certain daily tasks. Much like Niantic’s other titles, such as Pikmin Bloom and its step challenges, Peridot will have a focus on AR and walking outside so Peridots will be able to recognize the terrain they’re walking on and forage for appropriate items.
