Sony boss Jim Ryan has said ‘we are by no means done’ in terms of buying other companies, as he hints at more live service games.
At this point, multi-billion dollar purchases of other companies is beginning to seem routine. It started with Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda, but just in the last few weeks we’ve had Take-Two buying Zynga, Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard, and now Sony purchasing Bungie.
Many worried that Sony would be priced out of a potential ‘acquisition war’, with companies like Google and Meta the only ones able to compete with Microsoft, but Sony has insisted that fans ‘should absolutely expect more’ purchases in the future.
Sony isn’t a small company, it just isn’t a giant-sized one like Microsoft, but the £2.68 billion they’ve paid for Bungie may be at the upper-end of the scale they can easily afford. However, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has given no clue as to what other companies he is thinking of buying.
‘We are by no means done. With PlayStation, we have a long way to go’, Ryan told GamesIndustry.biz. ‘Elsewhere in the organisation, we have many more moves to make.’
Traditionally, Sony has tended to make smaller purchases, such as Spider-Man developer Insomniac and a spate of acquisitions last year that included Returnal maker Housemarque, PC port expert Nixxes, Demon’s Souls remake creator Bluepoint, and VR specialist Firesprite.
Sony has made it clear that Destiny 2 will not become a PlayStation exclusive as a result of the acquisition, and neither will future Bungie games, which has left some confused as to why exactly they bought them.
