Development woes, including rapid staff departures from developer The Initiative, mean that the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot may still be years away. The first-person shooter franchise, originally developed by Rare, serves as a spiritual successor to the beloved Nintendo 64 title GoldenEye 007. The announcement trailer for The Initiative's Perfect Dark was first revealed back at The Game Awards 2020, teasing an interesting new take on first-person action.
The Perfect Dark series casts players as Joanna Dark, an agent of the Carrington Institute who finds herself caught up in a sci-fi conspiracy involving two rival alien races. Dark fights against the dataDyne corporation, which seeks to manipulate extraterrestrial technology and supernatural artifacts in repeated bids for power and profit. Acting as a true successor to GoldenEye 007, the Perfect Dark series features both single-player campaigns and multiplayer game modes which allow players to cooperate or compete. The Initiative is currently creating the third installment in the series, with Crystal Dynamics also working on Perfect Dark to assist the brand-new studio.

A report from Video Games Chronicle suggests that Perfect Dark is still years away following an extremely turbulent period of development. Analysis of LinkedIn profiles reveals that up to half of The Initiative's staff left the studio in the last year, leaving less than 50 employees remaining. These departures include high-level creators, like Perfect Dark game director Dan Neuburger and design director Drew Murray.
