The Overwatch League's 5th Season kicked off over the weekend, and it only took 3 days for there to be a controversial moment. However, this bit of controversy took on a more fun, medium-stakes form. The Florida Mayhem played up to their name as they used an insane trick play from the attacker's spawn of Overwatch 2's new Escort map Circuit Royale to catch their opponents unaware. However, the play was deemed illegal.
In their match against the Paris Eternal, the Mayhem picked a team composition that included Mei and Symmetra. From just outside the Circuit Royale attacker's spawn room, they placed Mei's Ice Wall ability on top of a roof, then placed Symmetra's teleporter on top of the ice wall. This unexpected addition to the map architecture allowed the Mayhem to get onto the high ground and drop onto their opponents on the other side, catching them unaware as they waited for a more conventional attack to push through the map's initial choke point.

The match was allowed to continue as normal with the Mayhem eventually winning the map. But upon winning, the casters Jack «Jaws» Wright and Rosemary «Nekkra» Kelley interrupted the usual flow of an Overwatch League weekend accompanied by a message in the lower third of the screen stating that the Mayhem's attack round had to be re-played because the play was a known exploit in Overwatch 2. Head of the Overwatch League Sean Miller explained in a tweet after the ruling was announced that using the Mei Wall and Symmetra teleporter to reach unreachable areas in this way was an exploit and was not permitted.
