Overwatch was always pretty careful to stay in its lane. Yes, there’d be the occasional spray or costume reference to some other intellectual property outside of Blizzard or Activision, but generally, it was Overwatch’s world wherever you looked. That might soon change in Overwatch 2.
In an interview with Game Informer, Overwatch VP Jon Spector hinted strongly that Overwatch 2 might take on some Fortnite-style collaborations.

"We've seen some really fun examples out there of games working with other brands or other games," Spector said. "I'm a big anime nerd myself. I think it's super cool when I see Naruto appear in Fortnite. I don't even play Fortnite, but that's awesome. And as we look at the Overwatch 2 space, those are things that we're interested in exploring. If and when we do that, one of our key values is to do it in a way that feels like a great fit for the Overwatch franchise."
While it might be jarring to see Naruto outfits for Tracer or Roadhog, there is at least a benefit to these collabs outside of more cosmetic options. Having these collaborations would reduce the likelihood of "ads-in-our-game type stuff," according to Spector.
That's a good thing because Overwatch 2 is already facing plenty of criticism over its battle passes. New heroes won't be unlocked right away and will instead require players get to level 55 on the pass--unless you pay for the premium pass, of course. Worse, new Overwatch players won't even have the full roster available to them when the game launches on October 4.
