Nami's backstory is so tragic that even longtime readers can agree that it's one of the most depressing moments in One Piece. But how Luffy D. Monkey helps Nami conclude that part of her life to begin her next chapter with the Straw Hat Pirates makes no sense and could have been much more emotional than it already is if Nami was more deeply affected by Luffy's brash solution.
Like all of One Piece's greatest stories, Nami's own past is riddled with despair, blackmail, exploitation and betrayal. Nami's story begins with the murder of her mother by the Fish-Man Arlong, who exploits her village for money — a tragic enough circumstance by itself. But the young Nami later forces herself to make maps for Arlong so she can raise enough money to buy back her village. Nami's dream is for her people to live in peace, but Arlong later finds a loophole in their agreement so he can force Nami to start saving up money from scratch — just when she was actually about to pay him off.

To free Nami from her servitude to Arlong, Luffy not only defeats him but purposely directs the fight so that Nami's room — or prison — that stored all of the maps she created for Arlong is completely destroyed. It is undoubtedly a touching moment and one of Luffy's greatest acts of kindness for his fellow crewmates. This is especially the case when readers see Nami's tear-streaked face as she thanks him silently from the sidelines. But this moment could have been so much more considering Nami's relationship with her work.
