Actress and director Olivia Wilde has been tapped to star in the psychological erotic thriller, directed by Buster’s Mal Heart and Birds of Paradise filmmaker Sarah Adina Smith.
Smith wrote the script for Monkey Hill based on Paul Theroux’s story of the same name. The film will follow an heiress and her husband who have been accused of a white-collar crime. Together, they try to escape their situation and distract themselves with lustful adventures.
According to Deadline, Werewolf by Night and Cassandro actor Gael García Bernal will be joining Wilde in the Monkey Hill cast.
Deadline’s description reads as follows: “In Monkey Hill, an heiress accused of a white-collar crime hides away with her husband at a luxury resort in an Indian holy city. In deep denial of the growing scandal, they distract themselves with sexual escapades and spiritual dalliances. Meanwhile, the hotel staff who pamper them by the pool return each night to a village plagued by civil unrest and a deadly water crisis. When the couple ventures past the hotel gates that protect them, they awaken the sleeping giant of fate.”
Billed as a “sexy and seductive thriller,” Monkey Hill will be produced by Mynette Louie, Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino, and Anish Savjani. In addition to directing, Smith will also executive produce the project along with Jonako Donley, Feroze Alameer, Christine D’Souza Gelb, Kyle Jaeger, and Julia Nelson.
Wilde, who can next be seen in the upcoming thriller movie I Want Your Sex, has starred in The Girl Next Door, Turistas, Tron: Legacy, The Change-Up, Drinking Buddies, Better Living Through Chemistry, The Lazarus Effect, and How It Ends. She also directed the 2019 coming-of-age film Booksmart and the 2022 psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling.
Bernal is an award-winning actor whose credits include Fidel, The Crime of Father Amaro, Babel, Letters to Juliet, The Loneliest Planet, Old, and more.
