Nvidia has released new benchmarks for its upcoming RTX 4080 GPUs, and the results show a notable drop-off in performance from the 16GB model and the 12GB version.
Nvidia published the benchmarks in a Tuesday blog post(Opens in a new window) highlighting the company’s new frame-rate boosting DLSS 3 technology, which will be exclusive to the RTX 4000 series. The same benchmarks, which tested the games at 4K resolution, also show how the RTX 4080 GPUs perform when the DLSS feature is turned off.
As you can see, the RTX 4080 12GB performs significantly behind the 16GB model when it comes to frames per second. The 12GB is about 24% to 30% slower when tested in three games—Microsoft Flight Simulator, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and F1 22—in terms of raw performance without the DLSS technology activated.
If the DLSS is turned on, the performance gap between the two RTX 4080 models will still persist. The 12GB model performs about 21% to 26% slower, although both GPUs are able to boost the gaming experiences beyond 100 frames per second.
The benchmarks underscore how the RTX 4080 12GB and 16GB are effectively different PC graphics cards, despite sharing the same name. The specs alone show the RTX 4080 12GB only has 7680 CUDA cores and 192-bit memory interface, down from the 9728 CUDA cores and the 256-bit interface in the 16GB model. Hence many gamers have derided the RTX 4080 12GB as an overly expensive RTX 4070 in disguise.
The RTX 4080 12GB model will cost $899 when it launches. The 16GB model, on the other hand, will start at $1,199.
The benchmarks also show how the RTX 4080 GPUs fare against the older RTX 3000 series. With DLSS turned off, the RTX 4080 12GB will offer 11.5% to 24% performance improvement over the RTX
