Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dune are among the shortlisted films for the 2022 Oscars Fan Favorite Award. The award originated in 2018 as the Academy Award for Best Popular Film, which was cancelled due to being panned by members of the Academy as a way of diminishing blockbusters' chances to receive a Best Picture nomination. This year, however, the Oscars Fan Favorite Award will be given out at the official ceremony on March 27, and be decided by a public vote on Twitter.
The Tom Holland-led MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home proved a box office mega-hit immediately after its release in December 2021, bringing back several characters from previous Spider-Man movies. Dune is an epic sci-fi film from director Denis Villeneuve, and an adaptation of Frank Herbert's original 1965 novel. After its huge box office success and high praise from both critics and fans, many viewers and entertainment industry heavy-hitters criticized the fact that No Way Home was left off the 2022 Oscars Best Picture nominations list, citing a historic trend of superhero movies struggling to receive awards nods. Dune was nominated for Best Picture, but Villeneuve did not receive a Best Director nomination, which also stirred up some backlash.
