Whatever the next NetherRealm game is, its reveal is said to be separate from the celebration plans for Mortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary.
While the general assumption is that NetherRealm Studios’ next project is a new Mortal Kombat game (presumably Mortal Kombat 12), the studio itself has yet to officially confirm anything.
One assumption may be that NetherRealm is saving an announcement for Mortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary, but creative director Ed Boon himself has ruled out the possibility.
He is fully aware of fans’ anticipation for NetherRealm’s next game, but he says that its announcement will be handled separately from the upcoming anniversary celebrations.
Boon is known for trolling and teasing fans with somewhat cryptic comments, but he appears to be trying to be a bit more transparent as of late, having also ruled out an announcement at this year’s Evo to quell peoples’ excitement.
‘We know a lot of you are excited about the next [NetherRealm] game announcement and it will happen in due time,’ reads a recent tweet from Boon.
‘But first it’s all about 30 years of Mortal Kombat. That’s what we’re going to celebrate and focus on. Our next game announcement will be separate from MK30.’
The anniversary itself is this Saturday on October 8 and there is already a Mortal Kombat: The 30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle for PlayStation 5 and Xbox available on Amazon, which comes with Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and the 2021 movie.
However, NetherRealm doesn’t appear to have officially acknowledged it. It also hasn’t shared any further celebration plans or how long they will last.
This could point to the new game being unrelated to Mortal Kombat, although it doesn’t sound like it’ll be a new entry in the DC Comics fighting series
