Nintendo has confirmed that it will not attend Gamescom this year.
In a statement to Games Wirtschaft, a Nintendo of Europe spokesperson explained that the company would not have a presence at the Cologne show.
“Gamescom is a key event in Nintendo’s calendar of events,” the statement reads. “This year, however, after careful consideration, we have decided against participating in Cologne.
“Instead, players will be able to try out the games for Nintendo Switch at numerous events throughout Germany.
“Events that have been firmly scheduled so far include roadshows with our Airstreamer [tour bus] and our [VW] Bulli, for example at locations such as the SWR Summer Festival and the Stuttgart Children and Youth Festival.
“For Japan and video game fans, we have decided to participate in the Main Matsuri Japan Festival in Frankfurt as well as the DoKomi in Düsseldorf and the AnimagiC in Mannheim. Further tour stops and activities are being planned.
“We look forward to seeing our fans again at many regional events.”
Gamescom 2022, which is set to take place from August 24-28, will be a hybrid event held on-site in Cologne and simultaneously online.
The event will launch with Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 23. It will then open for trade visitors, press and content creators on August 24, ahead of four days of public access for ticket holders.
On top of the main business and entertainment areas of the convention, Gamescom 2022 also promises “additional sections, including for cosplay, retro, and indie fans”.
However, it’s not yet clear which companies will be attending the event – at the time of writing, only a handful of publishers including THQ Nordic and Koch Media have confirmed their attendance.
