Nintendo is set to expand its research and development capabilities by constructing a brand new 12-story research building in Kyoto.
In a post on its Japanese website today, Nintendo confirmed it has acquired a 10,000-square-meter plot of land in Kyoto for roughly $40 million (5,000,000,000 Yen). The land was previously used as a factory and a disaster prevention center, but now it's set to become a new home for its development efforts, be they for hardware, software, or both.
Nintendo announced its expansion plans in December last year, and is planning to rent two floors of the Kyoto City Waterworks Bureau’s new government building from next month. This building construction is the second phase of the expansion.
With the land now acquired, the new building is tentatively being called "Corporate Headquarters Development Center, Building No. 2." When completed in 2027, it's expected to have 38,000 square meters of floor space (and hopefully a better name).
The success of the Switch and first-party games to support it have clearly reminded Nintendo it's really good at developing hardware and software. The Wii U really was a blip! Expanding its R&D division demonstrates the company has every intention of continuing to offer consumers games and new hardware on which to play them for many years to come.
