Nintendo is investing heavily in feature films as they have acquired their own film studio. After years of denying Hollywood the rights to their popular franchise after the disappointing 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo has started to dip its toe into the feature film business once more. The first major one was 2019's Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and the company has partnered with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment to produce an animatedMario movie set for release in 2023.
It appears Nintendo will be making more feature film projects as, according to THR, the company has acquired the visual content company Dynamo Pictures Inc. Dynamo makes CG animation for television and video games and also dabbles in motion capture. The deal is expected to close around October at which point Dynamo Pictures will be renamed Nintendo Pictures Co. and become a subsidiary of the company. According to Nintendo, the plan is to "focus on development of visual content utilizing Nintendo IP.”

The move comes as one of Nintendo's biggest competitors in video games, Playstation, has been expanding into other media with television and film adaptations like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Twisted Metal. In 2021 Nintendo revealed they were planning more animated films after Mario. While rumors have circulated that Illumination Entertainment will make a Donkey Kong movie, with Seth Rogen voicing the character in the upcoming Mario movie, Nintendo Pictures Co. will make it easier for the company to adapt some of its most popular properties, which include franchises like The Legend of the Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Starfox, and Animal Crossing.
