Universal Pictures has announced the release date for Renfield, its upcoming monster movie in the Dracula universe starring Nicolas Cage. The film revolves around the power struggle between Renfield and his difficult employer, Dracula. The origins of Renfield in the Dracula lore is as a patient in an asylum whose greatest wish is to be immortal. In order to achieve this goal, he agrees to work for Dracula and do his most gruesome bidding in the hopes that Dracula will one day grant his wish.
According to Deadline, Renfield will hit theaters April 14, 2023, and will star Cage, Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class), and Awkwafina (The Farewell), who is poised as a potential love interest to Hoult. Also among the cast are Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) and Adrian Martinez (Stumptown). The film is being directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) with a screenplay from Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) that is based on an original idea from Robert Kirkman, the creator of the The Walking Dead.

Cage has been taking on more dramatic roles lately, however, Renfield certainly has potential for comic relief due to several of its cast members being well-versed in comedic acting, and McKay and Ridley having past credits in comedic films and series. The film also seems to follow a similar dynamic as Guillermo's relationship to Nandor in the hit dark comedy series, What We Do in the Shadows, from Taika Waititi. What balance of comedy, drama, and horror Renfield strikes will have to be seen in theaters.
