Developer Crystal Dynamics is returning to the Tomb Raider series and is building the game in Unreal Engine 5, the company announced on Tuesday. This would be the studio’s third AAA entry in the series since its reboot in 2013.
Crystal Dynamics, which took a break from the series after 2015 to develop Marvel’s Avengers, made the announcement in a post on Twitter, which calls out to developers experienced with the Unreal Engine to join the team.

“We're thrilled to announce the next TombRaider game will be developed on Unreal Engine 5,” the post reads. Another post from the official Tomb Raider account states the studio is “incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level.”
After launching Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015, Crystal Dynamics parted from the series to work on Marvel’s Avengers, a games-as-service-style game based on the popular comics series from Disney. (Eidos-Montréal launched the latest Tomb Raider game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, in 2018.) Since then, the Square Enix-owned studio confirmed it is co-developing a Perfect Dark reboot alongside The Initiative, the original team behind the shooter series. It would appear Crystal Dynamics will be working on both Perfect Dark and this untitled Tomb Raider game simultaneously.
Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) is the latest generation of Epic Game’s game engine. The development tool just launched this week, though multiple games and demos launched by Epic have been available.
