Sony has been quite open about its upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. The virtual reality device has gotten its official name and first game reveal, but the headset’s design itself has been a mystery. However, it is a mystery no more as the company revealed the first PS VR2 pictures and spoke more about its features.
PS VR2 is an evolution of the first headset and looks like a natural evolution of it (it even has a headphone jack in the same spot), but it’s still taking inspiration from the PlayStation 5 itself, given its rounder shape. Sony also “paid very close attention” to the ergonomics of PS VR2 so that it was comfortable for a variety of people, even making it an overall lighter headset. It will have an adjustable headband, scope, and lens readjustment dial so players can move it to be easier on their eyes and head. The first headset was widely lauded for being more comfortable relative to the other virtual reality goggles of the time. Its even got an air vent to improve ventilation and prevent fogginess. Senior Art Director at SIE Yujin Morisawa spoke about why that is his favorite feature.
“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow,” he said. “Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation.
