Reports indicate that Mafia 4 is currently in development at Hangar 13, and the project will apparently be built on Unreal Engine 5. The open-world crime series, which is often compared to Grand Theft Auto, explores organized crime throughout the 1900s from the perspective of multiple different protagonists. A remake of the first game titled Mafia: Definitive Edition offered updated gameplay back in 2020, but now a full-fledged fourth game in the series is reportedly on the way.
The first Mafia, developed by Illusion Softworks and released in 2002, established the series' open-world structure by immersing players in the golden age of organized crime. This first game takes players to the fictional city of Lost Haven, Illinois in the 1930s and casts them as taxi driver-turned-criminal Tommy Angelo. Mafia 2, meanwhile, is set in the fictional city of Empire Bay and stars war veteran and mobster Vito Scaletta. Development of Mafia 3 transitioned to studio Hangar 13 and brought players to the New Orleans-inspired New Bordeaux in the 1960s. The order to play the Mafia games is complicated by Mafia: Definitive Edition, despite each game being numbered, since the remaster contains references to the second and third installments in the franchise.
