New Last of Us HBO trailer teases what’s to come in future episodes
HBO has released a trailer teasing what’s to come in the weeks ahead on the Last of Us TV show, which is viewable below.
Based on Naughty Dog’s hit PlayStation series, the adaptation stars Pedro Pascal as smuggler Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, a 14-year-old girl who might hold the cure to a deadly parasitic virus that has swept the globe.
The first episode aired on Sunday night at 9pm ET on HBO Max in the US, and simultaneously on Monday morning at 2am on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
The Last of Us is produced and written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, who also co-wrote and directed the game series.
Over the course of nine episodes, the show’s debut season will cover the events of The Last of Us, which was released at the tail end of the PS3 generation in 2013, and its downloadable expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, which arrived the following year.
The adaptation, which has been well received by critics, is reportedly overall highly faithful to The Last of Us, although it’s said to include “some radical changes to the game’s story that will shock and perhaps challenge fans”, including one involving the character Bill, who is played by Nick Offerman.
In a recent interview, Druckmann hinted that the show’s second season will cover The Last of Us Part 2, which debuted for PS4 in 2020, and that Naughty Dog may have plans for a third entry in the series.
“People see bad adaptations and it adds credence to the idea that games are childish,” Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love the idea that someone could watch this and be moved by it and then be like, ‘Wait, that’s based on the video game?’”
