In many ways, the persistent popularity of the rogue-lite genre feels like an anomaly. With notable exceptions, gaming has trended towards more welcoming experiences that do not punish players too harshly whenever they die. On the other hand, rogue-lites pride themselves on their oftentimes steep difficulty, which sends players all the way back to the beginning after a single death. While some undeniably find this aggravating, many others find surpassing these overwhelming foods incredibly thrilling and rewarding, which at least partially explains why rogue-lites continue to find success. So it only makes sense that Steam currently has an entire sale devoted to the genre, which goes by the name Going Rogue.
I say that, but in reality, rogue-lites only represent a portion of the discounted games on offer despite what the name of the sale implies. It certainly features some noteworthy rogue-lite games, including Dead Cells and the recently released Rogue Legacy 2. However, the sale also offers some no-nonsense Metroidvanias, as well as some games that follow the design sensibilities of the Dark Souls series. Some critically-acclaimed games, such as Hollow Knight and Enter the Gungeon, have their prices dropped to only $5.99 USD, making two already fairly inexpensive titles even more accessible.
And the sale does not only include indie games. Major releases like Sekiro and Nioh 2 also have discounts. Notably, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which normally costs $39.99 USD, now has an incredibly generous price of $9.99 USD.
