The co-creator of Mortal Kombat has shared the events of the franchise’s first battle with fighting game rival Street Fighter. The first Mortal Kombat game was released way back in October 1992, and it was developed by Midway Games and released in arcades and home consoles via Acclaim Entertainment. The franchise has since released over a dozen games and several films, movies, comics, and more. Its latest main installment could already be in the works, with current developer NetherRealm Studios recently teasing Mortal Kombat 12. A number of supposed leaks have also been released over the past few months.
As for its rival, while the Street Fighter series released its first installment in 1987, its sequel Street Fighter 2 was the entry that ended up revolutionizing fighting games and inspired the creation of other games in the genre. It was even the success of Street Fighter 2 that led Midway to greenlight the development of Mortal Kombat, although the developers took pains to be as different from it as possible. Some of the significant ways Midway differentiated its fighting game from Capcom’s include its realistic digitized graphics as well as its more graphic or gory depiction of violence. Mortal Kombat’s violent Fatality finishing moves also became the series’ most recognizable element.

In a series of Tweets, Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias shared the story of when they brought out the prototype cabinet for the game to an arcade for its first weekend test. According to Tobias, he and co-founder John Vogel along with other Midway developers brought out the first prototype cabinet for Mortal Kombat to the Times Square Arcade in Chicago, where Midway Games
