As revealed by a synopsis on the official Mortal Kombat site, Mortal Kombat 1 will feature "Kameo" characters who are separate from the main roster and appear to act like assists.
Although it might feel like we've known about the existence of a new Mortal Kombat game for quite some time now (well, thanks to a Warner Bros. earnings call earlier this year and tons of hints from NetherRealm, we have), but it's actually only just been officially announced earlier today through a CG trailer. Alongside the trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, the official website was also updated to include a few details about some of the features in the game, although they raise just as many questions as they answer.

One of the most interesting things that's mentioned on the official Mortal Kombat 1 site is a brand-new mechanic for the series that appears to be one of the big new features of the game - Kameo fighters. According to the site, these allow you to "Choose from a unique roster of Kameo fighting partners to assist you in battle".
Now, since we've not actually seen any gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 yet, it's anyone's guess how these assists actually function in the game, or why they're called "Kameo" fighters, but it's a reasonable assumption that this is teasing some kind of tag-team mechanic or, like the website says, an assist function similar to Marvel vs Capcom 3 and other team fighters.
