It used to be the case that apart from a select few releases, a lot of video game movies were poorly received by both audiences and critics. However, in recent years, while films such as Detective Pikachu and 2021's Mortal Kombat might not be up for best picture, they certainly received positive feedback from the fans of those gaming franchises. Sega's efforts in creating video game movies have also seen success. Both Sonic the Hedgehog films are currently listed among the highest-grossing video game movies of all time.
Now, it seems that Sega wants to repeat the success of the Sonic movies. Already, a third Sonic the Hedgehog film has been confirmed to be in the works, but now Sega is also considering some other classic titles to be made into movies. Specifically, Sega is planning on turning Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone into movies, and according to Hollywood Reporter, some concepts have already been lined up for these projects.

Space Channel 5 is a 1999 rhythm game about a reporter named Ulala who manages to fend off invading aliens and her rivals through dancing. The game was praised for its unique art style and soundtrack, and while sales figures for the original release remained low, it has developed a solid fanbase in the years following Space Channel 5's launch. According to reports, the concept for the movie involves a protagonist working in a fast-food restaurant when Ulala appears, recruiting them to save the future from aliens by dancing.
