The developer behind The Sims, Maxis, never allowed pregnant characters to fully exercise their reproductive rights, but some enterprising modders have managed to fix this little oversight, bringing aboriton into the game. The Sims has become known for its relatively progressive approach to certain topics like same-sex marriage, but when it comes to abortion, Maxis has been reluctant to firmly position itself on the matter.
This comes in the wake of news that reproductive rights in the real world have been called back into question. When the Supreme Court ruled to overturn the landmark legal case known as Roe vs. Wade earlier this year, the right of a person to have an abortion suddenly became rather ambiguous. “We understand today is hard,” Maxis noted shortly after the ruling became known. “For those who play The Sims, the game has always been about being who you want to be, loving who you want to love, and creating the life you want to live. Our game is a reflection of our unwavering belief that everyone has a right to choose how they want to live their life without judgment, including the right to bodily autonomy.” The company however kept abortion out of The Sims.

Several modders have picked up the baton, making it possible for characters in The Sims to have an aboriton. LittleMsSam for example released a mod for The Sims 4 known as Miscarriage Chance & Abortion way back in June, 2018 which has been downloaded more than 250,000 times over the course of this past year, interest on the part of players of course reaching its greatest extent after the ruling by the Supreme Court.
