Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 will both include action scenes involving a submarine. The Mission: Impossible franchise has a long and storied history, beginning with the original television series of the same name, which aired on CBS from 1966 to 1973. The series, which was also briefly revived in the late 80s, was originally adapted into a film starring Tom Cruise as superspy Ethan Hunt in 1996. This spawned a series of sporadic Mission: Impossible sequels that followed in 2000 and 2006.
It wasn't until the fourth film, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol in 2011, that the franchise attained the shape it is best known for now. That film featured Cruise performing the massive stunt of running down the side of the Burj Khalifa, kicking off the series of impossibly real stunts he would perform in future sequels, all of which have so far been helmed by Chris McQuarrie. These stunts have included the notorious scene of Cruise being strapped to the side of a plane in 2015's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation. The pair are collaborating yet again on a seventh and eighth film in the franchise, which they are filming back to back.

Per THR, a submarine scene will be featured in both upcoming Mission: Impossible films, contributing to the studio's budgeting woes for the pair of action flicks. A submarine was apparently already planned for inclusion in Mission: Impossible 8, though the script had not yet been written. However, Cruise and McQuarrie decided to include one in Mission: Impossible 7 as well, even though they had technically already wrapped that project.
Mission: Impossible 7 and 8, which will come to theaters on July 14, 2023 and June 28, 2024
