Minions: The Rise of Gru takes place mostly in San Francisco, and the animated sequel continues a common movie mistake regarding the city's geography. Following the hugely popular 2015 movie Minions, which itself is a prequel to the Despicable Me franchise of animated films, Minions: The Rise of Gru follows the titular yellow henchmen in their early years with the supervillain Gru. After young Gru is kidnapped, a number of his Minions travel to San Francisco to save their miniature boss.
One of these Minions, Otto, embarks on a solo road trip toward the Northern California city. But first, he meets up with a biker in Death Valley, located hundreds of miles southeast of San Francisco. Midway through the massively successful Minions: The Rise of Gru, Otto is invited to ride on this man's motorcycle toward his destination, and they are eventually seen entering the city by way of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The problem with Otto and the biker driving over the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco in Minions: The Rise of Gru is that the duo is arriving from the south, yet the Golden Gate Bridge enters San Francisco from the north. This is not just an unfortunate goof on the part of the filmmakers, however, as countless movies and television shows are shot in the city, and most of them make the same common error of having characters entering San Francisco on the Golden Gate Bridge despite arriving from the south or east.
