Mass Effect 3 is the culmination of an entire trilogy’s worth of storytelling and character arcs. One of the major players is the leader of Cerberus, known only as the Illusive Man. Though bent on finding a way to save humanity by any means necessary, there is a way to convince the Illusive Man that he's wrong in what he’s doing.

Much like Saren in the first game, it's possible to pass a speech check to make the Cerberus leader have a last-second change of heart and atone for his sins. However, achieving this can be easily missed if you’re not careful. Picking the right choices will lead to a unique scene in the game’s climax.
Before you attempt to redeem the Illusive Man, this is what you need to take into consideration.
There are three different points in the game where you need to select a specific dialogue choice, all of which help you take the necessary steps in convincing the Illusive Man he is in the wrong.
The first occasion is towards the end of the mission on Mars, when Shepard and their squad check out the archives. The Illusive Man will show up via hologram, explaining how he plans on finding a way to control the Reapers rather than destroy them.
When you get the chance to advance the conversation, select the “You’re wasting time!” option. He’ll continue to talk, and once finished, select either the top left or bottom left option. Again, whether you pick the Paragon or Renegade option here, you have to stick with that choice for the next two encounters.
The next time you speak to the Illusive Man doesn’t occur until much later in the game, after you finish investigating the temple on Thessia during Priority: Thessia.
