Kao the Kangaroo, the mascot platformer from polish studio Tate Multimedia, is set to make a comeback with a brand-new title set to be released later this year. Revivals of classic mascot titles have become all the rave since the release of Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, with franchise like Spyro the Dragon and even Bubsy seeing a resurrection in one way or another.
Traction for a revival of Kao the Kangaroo began back in 2019, after the second game in the series, Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, was re-released on Steam. The game started attracting attention on social media with the #BringKaoBack campaign trending, with Tate Multimedia taking notice. In June 2020, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series, Tate Multimedia announced development of a new title was underway, showcasing new concept designs for what the game would entail.
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 5 Possible, But Would Require 'Much Bigger Budget'
Now, a brand-new trailer for Kao the Kangaroo has been released. The trailer, courtesy of IGN, showcases the game running on Unreal Engine 4, and what new adventures and challenges Kao will be up against with his super-powered boxing gloves.
The story of Kao the Kangaroo follows the anthropomorphic title character as he sets off on in search of his missing sister, all while battling various evil monsters that are influenced by a dark power. Unlike another Australia-themed mascot character, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, which specializes in a more modern aesthetic, Kao the Kangaroo looks to be taking more fantastical influences, with sweeping jungles, frozen tundras, and even a volcanic setting.
So far, Kao the Kangaroo looks like an exciting addition to the platform pantheon, with plenty of fun action and spectacle to be had.
