Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn gets candid about the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity and his occasional struggles with maintaining the canon. When the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise launched in 2014, it was mostly disconnected from the rest of the MCU beyond a Thanos cameo and the introduction of an Infinity Stone. Gunn's group of cosmic misfits were allowed to exist in their own bubble for the first few years of their story, but the end of Phase 3 saw them become integral parts of the shared universe.
Even though Gunn was temporarily fired from making Guardians of the Galaxy 3, his eventual rehiring has ensured that he's remained the man in charge of the Guardians' MCU adventures. He consults on all of their other appearances in the movies, such as Thor: Love and Thunder, and knew the broad strokes of how Phase 3 was going to change their story before he began working on the threequel. While Gunn has made it clear he has plenty of freedom in crafting their stories, he's now opening up about one aspect he sometimes finds difficult: maintaining the MCU's growing continuity.

Gunn revealed how difficult it can be to keep the MCU canon in line during a recent interview with The Playlist. He originally began talking about the pains of a shared universe continuity while discussing his work on Peacemaker, the HBO Max The Suicide Squad spinoff show. Gunn's issues are not as specific to the MCU canon, but more so knowing how seriously people around the world take the continuity, which he says can be difficult.
