A piece of Marvel fan art brings together Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Fox’s X-Men, and several other pre-Iron Man Marvel properties to form a proto-MCU. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has arguably been the defining Blockbuster achievement of the 21st century; spanning 27 films grossing over $25 billion, the series has been a huge hit, financially and critically, the world over. The effort shows no sign of slowing down, as the reopening of cinemas in 2021 saw the start of Phase 4 dominate the box office, not to mention the launch of TV series explicitly set in the MCU streaming on Disney+.
However, the foundations that the MCU was built on can’t go without credit, as there were several films that came before the seminal Iron Man that kickstarted general audiences' appetite for Marvel projects. Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man are generally credited for igniting the modern comic book movie boom that continues to this day, with each film being financially successful while delivering spectacular action and genuine drama that seemingly elevated the sub-genre. Each of these series received sequels and spawned even more Marvel adaptations of varying quality before the MCU introduced the concept of the shared movie universe to unite Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
