Bilbo Baggins is one of the most avid travelers that The Shire has ever seen. In fact, he is renowned for it, and it has caused him a lot of trouble, with the other hobbits, who are usually quiet and unassuming by nature, labeling him as ‘odd’ ‘troublesome’ and a ‘disturber of the peace.’ By the time he has reached his 111th birthday, after many long years spent in his home in Bag End, Bilbo begins to grow restless once more, telling his old friend Gandalf “I wish to see mountains again!”
However, there comes a time in every adventurer's life when they have to slow down a little, and admit that their journeying days are over. And for Bilbo, this happens surprisingly quickly, as age suddenly catches up to him after giving the ring of power to his heir Frodo. When the four hobbits who set out from the Shire 17 years after Bilbo, finally reaching Rivendell, they find the old hobbit looking much more frail and aged than when they last saw him.

And when Bilbo and Frodo are awarded the rare and amazing honor of going to the Undying Lands of Valinor at the end of the third film, Bilbo states “I think I’m quite ready for another adventure.” So does this mean that he never got to take that last trip that he planned, never got to see the mountains of his younger days as he so desperately desired, and only ended up making it as far as Rivendell? Fans will be pleased to know that this is not the case. Bilbo did in fact make it as far as the Lonely Mountain, back to visit his friends who still live in Erebor after their quest to reclaim their homeland 60 years earlier was successful and they managed to rid the golden halls of Smaug the dragon.
