After years of delays the new Lego Star Wars game finally has a new release date and it’s looking like it’ll be worth the wait.
A few years ago, there used to be two or three new Lego games released every year, but like so many other franchises the concept reached saturation point and suddenly there were none… until now. Or rather April.
The first release date given for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was May 2020 and needless to say it didn’t make that, or any of the subsequent ones. But the new, hopefully final, date is April 5.
The trailer above goes into quite a bit of detail about the game, which contains recreations of all nine mainline films and over 300 different characters.
Part of the reason for the delays is that this is a considerably more ambitious game than any of the previous ones, with open world interpretations of a huge range of different planets, as well as the normal story missions.
The melee and ranged combat is more involved, with combos and counters, and there’s dogfights in space when travelling between systems. There even seems to be a minor real-time strategy element in some sequences.
The game also nudges into action role-playing territory, with a number of different character classes and what looks like a simple skill tree system.
The other reason for the delays is that the Lego games are notorious for their bugs and this time there seems to be a concerted effort to do better.
If that’s the case, then this seems to have a good chance of being not just the best Lego game ever but one of the better Star Wars tie-ins too.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launches on April 5 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
