Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II was highly divisive upon release, and director Neil Druckmann recently spoke out against certain criticisms. The 2020 sequel sees players return to a brutal post-apocalyptic America after a fungal infection ravaged the planet and left the survivors to fight amongst themselves. The Last of Us Part II caused controversy with its story and depiction of violence, but many gamers also love the title for its emotional narrative and fast-paced survival gameplay.
The Last of Us focuses on two survivors, Joel and Ellie, who find themselves forming a father-daughter relationship as they journey across the ruins of America. The Last of Us 2 continues the story of both characters, though the game has an infamously controversial twist in its first act. Early on Joel is brutally killed with a golf club by Abby, who later becomes the game's secondary protagonist, with Ellie forced to watch in horror. This shocking event, which drives Ellie on a self-destructive quest for revenge, was highly criticized by fans. Joel's trust of Abby in The Last of Us 2, which directly leads to his death, received particular criticism due to Joel's characterization as a cunning and paranoid survivalist.
