A new Star Wars comic has revealed when Luke Skywalker first began collecting the sacred Jedi texts seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Luke Skywalker first learned about the Force at a time when the knowledge of the Jedi had been almost erased. When Palpatine became Emperor, he had gone to dramatic lengths to try to destroy all trace of the Jedi — all record of the Order and their teachings. Darth Vader and his Inquisitors scoured the galaxy seeking Order 66 survivors, while new Force-sensitives were either killed or spirited away to become part of the Emperor's plans.
But even Palpatine couldn't destroy all records of the Jedi. Charles Soule and Marco Castiello's current Star Wars run has revealed that Luke began his search for knowledge of the Jedi shortly after The Empire Strikes Back; believing Master Yoda would not welcome him back on Dagobah, he sought out other teachers, even discovering a Holocron recorded by Yoda himself during the High Republic Era. This guided Luke to a powerful vergence in the Force, the Living Sea of Gazian, where he made a remarkable discovery in Star Wars #20.

The Living Sea of Gazian is a vergence that allows Jedi to commune with the spirits of Force-sensitives who have visited the planet in the past. Some Jedi appear to have actually stayed there until their death, soaking in the secrets of the past — and apparently one of them left a copy of an ancient Jedi text there. A nexus of the light side, the Living Sea of Gazian brings this book to Luke, meaning he leaves the planet with the first of his sacred Jedi texts — the ones he would continue to collect throughout
