It's now been a full week since Kirby and The Forgotten Land launched on Nintendo Switch and it seems like most of those who have played the game are pretty enamored with it. The pink puffball's latest adventure is basically Super Mario Odyssey but with Kirby so yeah, what's not to like? It's about time something stopped us all talking about Elden Ring, and a Kirby game is probably the best way to switch things up.
Even though Kirby is an instantly recognizable video game character among an awful lot of people, and has been around for 30 years, he is actually one of Nintendo's smaller IPs. He can't hold a candle to the likes of Mario and Link, but The Forgotten Land's sales might be an indicator that things are about to change. The newest Kirby game has enjoyed the biggest launch ever for the series in Japan, and it isn't even close.

Famitsu revealed this week that The Forgotten Land sold more than 380,000 copies in Japan during its first week. That's a 46 percent jump from Kirby Super Star Ultra which has held the record for the biggest Kirby launch in Japan for over a decade. That naturally earned The Forgotten Land the number one spot in the Japanese chart this week, ahead of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokemon Legends: Arceus as the rankings are dominated by Nintendo games, which is very much the norm in Japan.
Japan isn't the only part of the world where Kirby has been making waves and breaking records. The Forgotten Land also shot straight to number one in the UK boxed chart, the first Kirby game to ever achieve that feat. That meant it has also been the biggest launch for a Kirby game in the UK, and has already become the fifth best-selling Kirby game of all time
