Killer Kross, who wrestled under the name Karrion Kross in NXT, believed that he and his wife Scarlett Bordeaux were going to be WWE lifers after signing with the company in 2019. At that juncture, there was a bit of a bidding war for his services with AEW, with WWE ultimately winning out. Kross would go on to be a dominant force in NXT alongside Bordeaux, which lead to his call-up in July of 2021.
Upon appearing on Monday Night Raw, Kross underwent a strange change. He was split away from Bordeaux, who was a very important aspect of his presentation in NXT. Not only that but Kross was stuck with what he'd later refer to as an evil gladiator gimmick. It was a departure from the sinister and sometimes violent character that he'd portrayed in the developmental brand and led to him not working out on Raw. He was released, alongside Bordeaux, in November of 2021.

While Kross had seen the writing on the wall once his gimmick was put on life support on Raw, he initially believed that he'd spend the rest of his wrestling career with the promotion. Speaking to Kevin Kellam of Sportskeeda Wrestling, Kross revealed the following about his initial feelings about joining WWE: “I don't have any bad feelings, but it's just a little unusual, you know? Scarlett and I always thought we were gonna' be lifers there. We thought that just because we had loved the environment so much. I mean this in the most endearing way, it was kind of like the military."
