Julia Roberts reacts to Sean Penn slapping her in a scene for Gaslit. Roberts stars alongside Penn in the Starz limited series, as Martha Mitchell, the wife of John N. Mitchell, played by Penn, who was the US Attorney General under President Richard Nixon during the Watergate Scandal. The series focuses on Martha's inceptive and unprecedented comments on the government and Nixon's participation in the scandal, which has dire consequences on both herself and her husband. The show is created by Robbie Pickering and is executive produced by Sam Esmail, with whom Roberts worked with in the first season of Homecoming. It also stars Dan Stevens, Shea Whigham, Betty Gilpin, Darby Camp, and Aleksandar Filimonović.
Both Roberts and Penn are Oscar-winning actors who have had long careers in both film and television. Despite having decades of projects under their belts and having known each other for a long period of time, Gaslit marks the first time they have shared the screen together. The political thriller series marks Roberts' return to the screen since 2018 when she starred in Homecoming and the movie Ben Is Back. Penn has since starred and directed the film Flag Day, made brief appearances in Licorice Pizza and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and has recently visited Ukraine to film a documentary on the current Russian invasion.
