John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ended on a cliffhanger note, but a darker ending was planned that might point to how the series will eventually end. John Wick: Chapter 2 fleshed out the world even further, increasing the body count and scale. The movie also ended on a cliffhanger, with Wick breaking the unbreakable rules of The Continental hotel and becoming a target. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum underlined the mess Wick had made for himself, with just about every assassin in the world coming for the bounty on his head. He was even betrayed by supposed ally Winston (Ian McShane), and the sequel ended with the implication he and Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King would team to wage war on the High Table.

Considering John Wick: Chapter 3 and the prior sequel ended on cliffhangers, it would appear director Chad Stahleski was consciously building a franchise. The filmmaker has always denied this, with both sequels originally having different endings. Speaking with The Empire Podcast about the third movie in 2019, Stahleski admitted one of his original conditions for returning was that Wick would die and it would close out the series. This would be a perfectly logical outcome to the filmmaker and may reveal how the John Wick movie franchise will eventually close.
