John Carter director Andrew Stanton has revealed previously unheard plot details for the movie's planned sequels. It has now officially been ten years to the date that John Carter was released in theaters. Despite being helmed by Stanton, who directed the critical and financial smash hits, Finding Nemo and WALL-E, and based on one of the most influential science-fiction stories of all time, the movie that was released was a box-office bomb that Disney ended up taking a $200 million dollar to loss just ten days after its release.
John Carter was released with the intention of generating a franchise, as Stanton already had drafted sequel plans if the movie was a hit. However, after the box-office disappointment of the film, Disney let the rights lapse in 2014, and now the sequels have been lost to time. Even with the film's box-office disappointment, in recent years, John Carter has generated a cult following like similar failed Disney franchise starters, Dick Tracey and The Rocketeer,and the lost sequels have caused many fans to wonder what could have been. In a report by The Wrap,detailing the production history of John Carter in honor of the ten-year anniversary of the film's release, Stanton revealed previously unknown details about the film's planned sequel.
