Lightyear marks an exciting new chapter in the Toy Story franchise. The film serves as an origin story for the fictional Space Ranger and hero who would go on to inspire the toy Tim Allen first brought to life in the original movie.
With a few months still remaining until the film's arrival, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with Director of Photography Jeremy Lasky to discuss Lightyear, his adoration for the sci-fi genre, crafting the film's look with his other teams and unique influences.

Screen Rant: I'm excited to get to talk about Lightyear. From what I've seen so far, it's an absolute blast. You've been with Pixar for quite a while now, but what was it about Lightyear that specifically drew you to want to be a part of the project?
Jeremy Lasky: Well, primarily, it was Angus as a director. Angus and I went to school together; we met and became friends in art school a while ago, and we've been making movies next to each other since college. Whether we're on the same project or not, we've always been talking about films and going back and forth. I'm like, «Oh, my close friend is going to make this awesome movie. I want to work on the awesome movie, and I want to work with him.»
That was the big draw for me, just knowing what a great director he is and knowing how excited I was about his pitch. I was in, like, «How can I get things to align to be on that film?»
Director of Photography is already such an interesting position in live-action. But with animation, I can't even imagine what all goes into it. What are some of the biggest keys for you?
