Warning: contains preview images for Batman '89 #5!
Jack Nicholson terrified audiences as the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman, but he also traumatized the citizens of Gotham far more than fans realize. In the six-issue Batman ’89 mini-series, DC is continuing the story of director Tim Burton’s Batman, and in a preview for issue five, fans get a glimpse of the scars the Joker left on Gotham. The issue is on sale April 12 in print and digital.
Bat-Mania gripped America in the summer of 1989, driven by the runaway success of Tim Burton’s Batman, starring Michael Keaton as the titular hero and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Both actors turned in amazing, iconic performances that are still fondly remembered today; Jack Nicholson’s interpretation of the Joker was particularly terrifying, perfectly embodying the cruelty and randomness of his comic book counterpart. Audiences saw the Joker ruthlessly dose innocent people with Smylex gas, killing them and leaving them with a permanent, soulless Joker grin. During the movie’s climax, the Joker attempted to dose the entire city, but was thwarted by Batman; shortly thereafter, the Joker fell to his death. While the Clown Prince of Crime is gone, he is most certainly not forgotten as seen in a preview for Batman ’89 #5, written by Sam Hamm and penciled by Joe Quiones.
