Hazelight Studios has revealed that five million copies ofIt Takes Two have been sold. Considering that the game comes with a Friend's Pass that allows owners to play with a friend even if they don't own it themselves, and the fact that it's also currently available to subscribers of EA Play or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, it’s potential that many, many more people have played the game.
It Takes Twowas released in March 2020 and became an instant success. The highly anticipated follow-up to director Josef Fares' previous titles Brothers and A Way Out, the game offered players one of the best co-op experiences in recent memory. In fact, the game isn't playable in single-player mode at all: the only way is to play split screen or online co-op with a friend. The story tells a tale of a married couple who are about to get divorced until they are turned into dolls, and have to work together to survive and get back to their daughter. In other hands, it could have been cringe-worthy, but Hazelight made it an impactful story about communication and human connection, something newly relevant in these times.
It Takes Two Developer Teases More 'Co-Op Adventures'
It was an immediate critical success, and while Fares’ previous titles have been acclaimed as well, It Takes Two far took it to another level. It ended up topping several Game of the Year awards, including Game Rant’s own Top 10 Games of 2021 and The Game Awards.
While Hazelight Studios announced that It Takes Two sold over a million copies in only a month after release, it only got more popular after being featured in sales and on previously mentioned end of year awards lists. A Steam Winter Sale that made the game half-price helped even more gamers decide to pick it up,
