Multiversus, which officially launched today in Early Access Open Beta (because that’s how video games work now) has done a lot to differentiate itself from Super Smash Bros. It does not have items, except for the ones generated by the characters themselves; it doesn’t have Smash Attacks or Final Smashes, though most character have a few charge attacks that are kind of like smashes; it groups characters into classes like support, tank, and bruiser and gives them unique utility to support their different playstyles, though admittedly, the best strategy is still to punch the other players until they go flying off the edge of the stage. The Iron Giant is developer Play First Games putting its big iron balls on the table and saying ‘Multiversus will not be defined by bros that smashed before us.’ Iron Giant tells us to take our expectations and chuck them out the window, because Multiversus is doing its own thing, and it’s not afraid to take some big risks.
