SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet system can get pricey and normally costs consumers a one-time $599 fee for the hardware alone. But in Italy, the company has been offering a surprisingly large $400 discount on the Starlink dish equipment to new subscribers.
The lower pricing appears if you visit the Starlink.com site from within Italy. The site lists the one-time hardware fee at only €199 (US$202), a steep discount from the €634 the Starlink dish currently costs in many other European countries.
Users in Italy first noticed the price drop on July 26, according to posts on Twitter(Opens in a new window) and Reddit(Opens in a new window). So it doesn’t appear the discount is a brief fluke.
We’ve reached out to SpaceX for comment, and will update the story if we hear back. But Italy isn’t alone in receiving a price cut. In Germany last month, SpaceX also lowered(Opens in a new window) the price of the Starlink dish to €399 (US$406).
The price cuts in Europe are surprising when you consider that SpaceX increased the cost for the Starlink dish hardware for users in the US from $499 to $599, citing inflation.
The new pricing suggests the company is experimenting with lower costs, at least for users in Europe. Last week, SpaceX also halved the monthly subscription price of Starlink for users in France from €99 to €50. But on the downside, the company will start imposing high-speed data caps in the country in an effort to cut down on congestion from too many users stretching Starlink’s capacity.
“Users who consume 250GB/month or less of data will be prioritized. Users who exceed 250GB/month will still have access to unlimited data, but may experience slower speeds during times of network congestion,” SpaceX told
