A Disney movie isn't necessarily the first thing that springs to mind when imagining a good setting for a Soulslike game. On the surface, the two things couldn't be any further apart. So when a Soulslike game called Lies of P was revealed, based on the story of Pinocchio, eyebrows were raised. A story trailer shed some brief light on the premise, and revealed a dark, Lovecraftian setting, with winding abandoned streets and a distinct late 1800s aesthetic. Narrated by Geppetto, he explains the City of Krat has been overrun by a plague and deranged automatons before entering a church and ordering his son to awaken. It's clear that while the story of Pinocchio is familiar to many, Lies of P's interpretation will not be.
The initial story trailer was then followed up by another which focused on gameplay, and this is what really perked gamers' attention. Protagonist Pinocchio is seen wielding a variety of weapons, from swords to axes, and even what looks like a whirligig saw, which fans of Bloodborne should be familiar with. While the story is based on the classic Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, it is extremely obvious that the game will draw heavy inspiration from the Soulsborne series, and the similarities to Bloodbornein particular are obvious. With both trailers focusing on different elements, it will be interesting to see what the next trailer reveals, and there are a couple of things it should include.
