Scorn's sound effects make it feel like you're crawling around the innards of a whale, squelching about in a giant fleshy cavern like Jabu-Jabu's belly. It's uncomfortable, and it took a lot of effort to get it to be that gross.
The audio team crushed bones and rocks to get those uneasy crunching sounds - hopefully not human bone - and they squished meat and fruit for all those mushy flesh-sounding effects. With a world that screams H. R. Giger, having an ambience to match the twisted world design only makes sense.

Knowing it's probably just a few peaches being mutilated and a few rocks being smashed doesn't really help with the queasy feeling Scorn's sounds give off, but it's comforting to know what's really behind all the gross noises we hear.
Scorn has been in the works since 2014, meaning it's been in development for nearly a decade, so Ebb Software has had plenty of time to fine-tune the horrors of its world from the oddly human yet distinctly alien environments to the disturbing sounds, and today, we'll finally be able to experience it all for ourselves. It's free on Xbox Game Pass, too.
If you've missed the past eight years of teases, promo, and trailers, Scorn is a horror game through and through with very, very fleshy environments - hence the squelching footsteps. There are equally unnerving monsters and mutated creatures that you'll have to fend off while you play, usually through very organic-looking guns that are a far cry from the usual sort we're used to. But despite it featuring guns in first-person, Ebb Software has emphasised that "Scorn is by no means a shooter", insisting that they are optional tools you can use to progress.
