Richard Linklater has explained how his new movie Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood connects thematically with Harry Potter. Linklater is an Academy Award-nominated writer and director known for films including his coming-of-age picture Boyhood, which was shot over the course of a 12-year period. Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood is his latest film and is set to be released onto Netflix on April 1, 2022.
Linklater's films are renowned for their distinct style, often using loose narratives and focussing on the effects of time. They have previously explored the experience of childhood and the process and challenges associated with growing up. Carrying on with this theme, Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood will center on the experience of a young child (aged ten and a half) as he is recruited to join a covert NASA mission. The film is animated using rotoscoping, following in the footsteps of Linklater's 2006 sci-fi film A Scanner Darkly, which was adapted from the Philip K Dick novel of the same name.
