Kevin Smith opens up about how his near-fatal heart attack in 2018 impacted the prolonged development of Clerks III. The upcoming comedy film is the third installment in the Clerks film series which began in 1994 and the ninth overall installment in Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse. Other than Jason Mewes and Smith as Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks III also features the returning characters: Brian O'Halloran as Dante, Jeff Anderson as Randal, Marilyn Ghigliotti as Veronica, Rosario Dawson as Becky, Trevor Fehrman as Elias, and Marc Bernardin as Lando.

In 2012, Smith offered an update on the progress of Clerks III, revealing that an audit of The Weinstein Company was preventing several key cast members from coming on board, including Anderson. Smith eventually completed an initial script for Clerks III, but would struggle to receive funding for the project and secure Anderson as a lead star. However, that all changed in 2018 when Smith suffered a near-fatal heart attack.
