Hunter’s name was a subtle clue to one of The Owl House’s most successful plot twists. While The Owl House is filled with well-plotted surprises, the reveal that Hunter, also called the Golden Guard, was actually an artificial being known as a Grimwalker was immensely satisfying due to the show’s strong foreshadowing. This foreshadowing included two clear pieces of evidence viewers could use to put the answer together themselves—a glimpse at a book on Grimwalkers that Emperor Belos was reading and Hunter’s inability to use magic—and a third, less obvious piece of the puzzle in the form of Hunter’s name.

Luz’s name means “light,” and the first spell she learned to cast was a light spell. Willow’s name shows her connection to plant magic, Amity’s reflects her shift from bully to friend to Luz’s girlfriend, and King’s foreshadows his identity as a god-like Titan. Even minor or side characters have clever names. The Plant Coven head Terra Snapdragon, for example, is named after both a flower and the soil plants need to grow.
